Lake Orion
I Heard You Paint HousesLake Orion is associated in the book with Jimmy Hoffa’s cottage near Detroit, a private setting linked both to Frank Sheeran’s final effort to reach Hoffa before his disappearance and to the investigation that made Sheeran and Russell Bufalino suspects. A later call to the same cottage turns the location into a point of contact in Sheeran’s attempt to persuade Hoffa to return to union leadership.
The Lakeside Cottage
Hoffa kept a yellow pad beside his phone at a summer cottage by a lake. When the Federal Bureau of Investigation found it, the room was filled with tearful and anxious members of Hoffa’s family. On the pad, written in pencil, were the words “Russ & Frank.” The cottage thus appears not simply as a retreat, but as a place where a small written clue acquired weight amid the family’s fear and the search for someone close enough to get near the cautious Hoffa.
Sheeran’s Call in July 1975
On Sunday afternoon, July 27, 1975, Sheeran called Hoffa at his cottage in Lake Orion from his own apartment in Philadelphia. He described the call as a peace mission and said he wanted to prevent what was coming. Hoffa was gone by Wednesday, July 30. Sheeran later argued that using his own phone showed he had not been involved in a plot: if he had been, he said, he would have called from a pay phone. The location’s association with the disappearance therefore rests alongside Sheeran’s own account of a last effort to warn or persuade his friend.
A Later Appeal
In another call, Sheeran recalled being in his Philadelphia kitchen with the phone in his hand and Hoffa on the line at the Lake Orion cottage. Nine months after Frank Sheeran Appreciation Night, he was still hoping Hoffa would reconsider taking back the union while there was time. The cottage recurs as the endpoint of a personal appeal, connecting the unresolved disappearance to the struggle over Hoffa’s return to union power.
